Giveaways halted and news on my YouTube channel for 2011

Thu, Dec 9, 2010

Unfortunately there wasn’t momentous adoption of the giveaways so I regret to inform you that they wont continue until traffic increases. In other news, regarding my YouTube channel, I am thinking about revamping it for 2011, I’m going through many ideas that may never see the light of day but they are possibilities. In any case 2011 should be a good year for my channel and the content will remain the same or better no matter what – thank you to everyone who has subscribed, I reached 14,000 last night.

We’re Sorry, Infinity Ward (The Failure Of Black OPS)

Wed, Nov 10, 2010

We’re Sorry, Infinity Ward (The Failure Of Black OPS)

So, the reason this post is entitled “We’re sorry, Infinity Ward” is simply because my vision was clouded by hopes and expectations for Black Ops. You see, this all stems back to when Modern Warfare 2 was officially released last year, everybody seemed to have server problems upon release date, no one could connect or join a game. The thing we all didn’t understand was that simply the reason we encountered server problems was because it was that good of the game, everybody wanted it, and for good reason. After playing Black OPS I realized my mistake in buying Black OPS.

Here is the story, most people love Call Of Duty and have huge expectations for it, especially big launches like Black OPS. Most people I had spoken to said with alacrity “Yeh, Black OPS will be far superior to MW2″ sadly though, that’s not the case. Here are my reasons why, firstly we have the server problems which MW2 had upon release date (I’ll admit it, at least it does connect unlike MW2 when it came out) nevertheless there is a momentous problem with the very aspect in which drives the Call Of Duty franchise, its online gameplay. I had a go of Black OPS as I’m a pretty casual gamer (my Brother is a pretty big gamer, I’m not, hence why he does the commentaries on my channel.) and every match bar a few connected to American servers, which is great if you are American but not so much if you are like me and live in Australia. The incredible lag was too much, I ended up leaving 2/3 games due to server problems, MW2 had this problem as well but you would have though Treyarch would have taken note and made sure this didn’t happen again.

It seems that the heart of the franchise, its online gameplay is pretty messed up right now and may stay that way for the foreseeable future. The servers don’t have segregated areas for players from different countries it’s just a luck of the barrel kind of thing, which in my opinion is unacceptable for a $110AU game. The menu system is not very innovative and it’s pretty hard to navigate, it reminds me in a way of WAW (Word At War) which is not good as we are in 2010 they need to get with the times. The new set of noobie weapons don’t exactly augment the online experience, they hinder it. The flamethrower is the most annoying thing I ran into on my stint of playing Black OPS, granted there are other noobie weapons like that crossbow thing and the RC car (excuse my lack of gaming knowledge, as I said I’m a casual gamer). The RC car is awesome to be honest but I can foresee this as becoming a novelty and then a regret, many noobs will probably misuse it and hinder your online games. And that just scratches the surface of the underlying problems that plague Black OPS right now.

I would like to take this time to apologise to Infinity Ward for ragging on them so much, in retrospect they did make the best Call Of Duty game I have ever played. Better luck next time I guess?

–BTW the giveaways will begin next week so stay tuned everyday on this site.

Weekly giveaways on the way!

Thu, Nov 4, 2010

So, I know I have not posted in a while on my site, almost one year to be exact. I will try and update my site at least once a week. Now, it will be hard for me to update my site every day as was the case earlier last year so at this present time it is just not possible I simply don’t have the time, but weekly updates should be feasible. If you have come here from my YouTube channel please make sure the check back at least once a day because I will be posting more content onto this website.

Now, onto the good stuff. The giveaways. All you need to do to win every week is just simply check back every day or, if your desperate, every hour and anytime of any day at random I will deploy a gift card with the code in plain view onto this site. How do you win? Simple, just be the first person to redeem the code once it first gets published there also will be a monthly giveaway to the person who leaves the most comments (not spam, like choose me but proper comments regarding the post). Of course, if the site receives an initial boom, then declines in views the giveaways will be discontinued as there not a sufficient amount of viewers on this site to continue the giveaways but regular posts will continue.

I will try not to neglect this site anymore as it was going very well early last year but now sadly I just don’t have the time to update it as frequently however, this site will be the future home for my show notes a.k.a. video notes from my reviews. Whether it be an un-boxing or a review I will try and list the notes on that particular product here. So If you do watch my YouTube videos you’ll  be able to come onto this site and view the notes for the video like links and other related items to that video. And in regards to my setup videos like I did last year, my new setup video is coming quite soon by the way,  this site will contain exclusive photos and media regarding that particular video. So hopefully you’ll find the content on my site very useful, you can go back and search all my previous posts from recent years and you may find that useful. Some of the products that I didn’t review on my YouTube channel  you can find the review for here.

How To Run Google’s Chrome OS without using a Virtual Machine

Sun, Dec 13, 2009

So as we all know Google’s new chromium OS looked exciting but once we relized that we all had to use a Virtual Machine to run it, it kind of made the excitement die.

Luckily there is a way to run Googles new OS *Without* installing any VM software and run it off a USB flash drive, how? you might ask, well thanks to a few clever people the process is rather easy this is not my work and should not be treated as such this is ALL quoted from  ChromeOSgeek.com Also I just included the Mac and Windows guide you can actually head over to his site and check out his guide for linux as well.

Windows Instructions for installing Chromium OS to USB

Download Image Writer for Windows from here and extract the program. Launch the program, and select the image (ChromeOS-Cherry.img) and your USB drive letter from the drop down box. Click “Write”. The install image will then be copied to the drive. Once it’s done, close the program and you can then boot from the USB Drive.

For Mac Users Follow this procedure

Firstly, unmount the drive you want to install Chromium OS to. Place the downloaded file onto your desktop. Open System Profiler, click USB on the list at the side and then select the entry that represents your USB disk. Now look for the BSD Name column (http://bit.ly/5mG4WK). Remember what is written here. In my case, it is disk1, but in yours it may be different. Take care here as if you get it wrong, it could seriously mess things up. Once you have this, open up Terminal and type the following commands.

cd Desktop
tar -zxvf ChromeOS-Cherry.tar.gz

For the next command, replace X with the name of the disk you found earlier, ie disk1.

sudo dd if=ChromeOS-Cherry.img of=/dev/X bs=4m

This command will ask you to enter your password (the same one you enter when installing software for example), type it in and press enter. This command will take a while to run, about 20 minutes for me, and then will give you your shell prompt back once it has finished. Once it has, you can remove your USB drive and boot from it.

The biggest question is how do I go about obtaining this distribution? Simple I managed to find a link to Chrome OS Slim for download right here so hopefully those of you who saw this on YouTube will be able to give this a shot for yourself and test it out!.

Also stay tuned on my blog because the next episode of my podcast will be out soon. And I may make a post talking about what is going to be happening concerning videos in the first quarter of 2010.

Max Upgrades SSD Sled Plus How To Install An SSD Into A Mac Pro

Sun, Oct 11, 2009

Ok so as you may know I got an SSD (Solid State Drive) with my Mac Pro however as we all know you cant mount a 2.5′ drive in a 3.5′ Sled, so you may be thinking, how do I mount it in there then?, well surprisingly I came across a very good product for doing just that its called the Max Upgrades Hard Drive sled basically its like a modified Mac Pro sled but it allows you to mount any 2.5′ drive with this bracket as such. So the reason I’m so impressed by this is, first it came greatly packaged not a scratch on it all the way from the U.S, now the big thing is its a full high quality *Metal* bracket which is great it also has a big heat-sink on it to stop your drive of choice from getting hot for example a 2.5′ 10k velociraptor drive gets VERY hot, an SSD doesn’t really generate a lot of heat if any.

Mac Pro

So how do you mount this? (Someone on this site also asked this question). All you do is get your drive and position it with the screw holes then get a screw and get the corresponding allen key the just simply screw it in place, simple just repeat for every screw there should be 4 holes, 4 screws etc. if you are looking to buy this great product here is the link to their site: http://maxupgrades.com also make sure that when you order from them you get the counterpart sled for example if you have an ‘08 Mac Pro get the ‘08 sled if you have an ‘09 Mac Pro get the ‘09 Sled. Sorry about this short post there will be more to come also check out my new page for my podcast that I just started http://bilsta57.com/?page_id=1263 it will have all the episodes of the podcast archived there.

Mac Pro 2009 “Nehalem” Review

Wed, Oct 7, 2009

Ok so the other day as you may know if you watch my YouTube videos, I got my Mac pro and I have been lazy in posting to my site lately so I will start posting more frequently now. Ok so to start the huge difference from all other Mac Pro’s is this Mac Pro is based off the core i7 architecture which is very important because that is cutting edge of processors these days it will also allow me to upgrade the processor if Apple updates it (Not covered by warranty, obviously) so that is great, not only that it has DDR3 Ram which is the latest revision of ram so I can upgrade that so I guess this revision (4,1) of the Mac Pro is very upgradable, in fact I have heard of some putting a core i7 975 Extreme in his Quad core model pretty cool stuff.

mac pro processor2

So getting onto the hardware side mine is 2x 2.93GHZ Nehalem Processors for a total of 8 cores and 12GB of DDR3 ram at 1066MHz with a ATI Radeon HD4870 and an Intel X25 E SSD (64GB) and 2 superdrives, wifi etc. You can see the full specs on my video. This system is so quick its unbelievable and a lot of that has to do with the SSD because your hardware can be insane and your performance may be slow, why?. Well because a HD or Hard Drive has to spin to access files and its not an instant access plus the read times are insane mine is 250MB a second, yeh crazy, and write is 170MB a second anyway if you do get a good computer make sure you get an SSD that is very important.

mac pro overview copy

Another thing to note is that this computer can game with the 4870 and it runs games on very high and for people that say macs cant play Crysis well I was playing it all on high on windows 7 so there you go it can. I also tested GTA IV which ran great and also Batman Arkham Asylum which runs very, very smooth on very high its also a very good game if someone is looking at getting it. In terms of gaming you don’t get a Mac for that obviously, I’m not a noob I know that, but It can run games the same as a windows machine but a Mac is defiantly not ideal for gaming at all, for gaming you would build your own windows pc or get a gaming rig pre built if you don’t know how or don’t want to.

So back onto the Mac pro, it runs smooth I haven’t had one hiccup with the machine it just runs as it should and one small thing to note is that they changed the Hard drive bay sleds for more space for your hands, Thank God!, it was quite bad before because your fingers would get crushed every time you took out a hard drive, its fans have also been changed as well to allow more adequate ventilation. I really like this machine and I would recommend it to anyone who needs a powerful machine, oh and btw it scored 15000 something in Geekbench 32bit in case you wanted to know the benchmark. Also enjoy the pictures and my video :D.

Ok so I apologise for being lazy on posting lately but there will be some posts, some very good posts coming up next week and maybe some more posts this week but I have been busy with everything like YouTube and all that also I was on the Tech Webcast you can have a listen here:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
